# More Gen Con Event Madness
tags: #thoughts

Hold up. As a sort of follow-up to [[The Gen Con RPG Event List Pains Me|yesterday's post]], I've been exposed to this one, and I would like to point out that it hurts my soul at a deep and abiding level.

Okay, fine. You get to play in a game DM'd by someone of some relevance to the hobby, but let's look further down. There are a couple of slots left for this game, and it's not hard to understand why because it's literally $128 a seat.[^1]
Let me repeat that for the people in the back row: $128 a seat.
Now, I don't know about you guys, but I admit that I'm a hypercapitalist at heart, and you should be able to sell anything that you can move at any price people will pay. I get it. It's okay.
I also know that the target demographic for this player group is going to be older males who have disposable income.
They've already decided to go to a fairly expensive convention in a fairly expensive city, and this is going to be a three-hour indulgence for them.
Sure. Okay. Fine with me.
I am more than a little uncomfortable with charging over $120 a slot for a three-hour RPG.
Sure, it apparently has three GMs.
I would further say, *"Why in the fuck do you have three DMs?"*
I don't know, man. Like I said, hypercapitalist to the core. Get that stack of cash where you can.
But if you wanted to know part of why the modern hobby feels like everybody's trying to sell you something, few people are actually playing for the love of the game, and you've priced the kids out of the experience…
I feel like this might have some impact.
Zed's dead, man. Zed's dead.
[^1]: I only noticed when I was working on putting in the illo for this article that one of those sessions is actually going for *$154 a seat.* But, in fairness, it's a four-hour slot. I'm not sure I can say that with a straight face. "In fairness."
