# Loner Assistant Assists With New Inspiration tags: #thoughts #game/rpg/loner ![[Loner (cover).jpg|300]] So I was tinkering with the new *Loner Assistant* (https://loner-assistant.netlify.app/), which is a sort of web interface for playing the RPG *[[Loner]]*, which odds are good that you've never heard of, and that's a shame, because this is what fell out.[^1] - **Setting:** Urban Fantasy Underworld - **Tone:** Oppressive and claustrophobic - **Elements:** Dark magic, Epic journeys - **Opposition:** Divine judgment - **Actions:** Destroy → Survive - **Key Element:** World domination Now *Loner* is a very fiction-forward narrative RPG. It's not about hardcore simulationism. It's very much focused on oracular solo play, though you can certainly play it solo, co-op, and guided without a problem. You can probably sum up the core of the mechanical resolution system in a single page, and it won't even be a large font. The setting supplements are really more a collection of random generation oracles and mood-setting content. It is, not to put too fine a point on it, pretty awesome. It satisfies one of my criteria for a good game, which is a character sheet should fit on a 3x5 card, preferably just the front. Remember what I said about being heavily Oracle-focused? I decided to pop down to the tools section and just punch **Adventure Maker** just to see what kind of thing fell out. Look up at that list of elements and think about them for a minute. A modern urban fantasy underworld that's oppressive and claustrophobic, full of dark magic and epic journeys, and your opposition is divine judgment. And a key element is world domination? Come on. You're probably slobbering to play that right now, if you're not already in a game that's pretty close to that. I have to say, I like it when things work, and I like it when tools do something really neat. And in this case, they're definitely doing something really neat. If you want to check out *Loner*, you certainly can. Like many things that I talk about, it is absolutely free if you want it, as are all of its supplements. But if you read it and feel like you're intrigued, go ahead and pay for hard copies to go on your shelf or go in your gaming bag and get brought out at your local gaming event, convention, or game night. It's a fantastic filler game, and for the right people, it's the right game all the time. https://lonersrd.zotiquestgames.com/ [^1]: I really do need to spend some time and sit down to add *Loner* to the solo play pile. I should get to it because it's so primed for it, but I suppose that's going to have to wait until I figure out when to do it.
