# Forgotten Ruin, A Actual Play and Where to Get It

Today we're actually not going to take something that I wrote for Reddit, but instead something that I wrote for X. But don't worry, there's actual content here, I promise. In fact, I get to talk about one of my favorite games, *[[Forgotten Ruin - the RPG|Forgotten Ruin: the RPG]]*. Come to think of it, it's two of my favorite games with [[Forgotten Ruin - The Adventure Wargame|Forgotten Ruin: the Adventure Wargame]].

(Direct Link to the Actual Play? Sure!)

> It is a slightly more narrative-infused core mechanical system than DCC or D&D 5th Edition. It's somewhat reminiscent of the old WEG D6 system used in Star Wars, in that character traits are rated in a certain number of D6, rolled as a pool and added to try and pass a target number. This isn't as bad as it sounds for doing the math because most rolls are capped at counting 3d6. So you can have a 5d6 attribute, but you only have to add up the highest three. In practice, that makes it pretty easy to deal with.

> There's no hit point system. Instead, it is up to the targeted player, for the most part, which of their resistances that they take any damage to. Yes, that means that you can get shot with an M16 and take it to your composure or will, representing how it's rattled you and made you less likely to be willing to charge forward.
>
> Frankly, I consider this so much better than a standard hit point system that it is well worth mentioning in the context of the game, and it's part of the reason that I really prefer it to the 5e or DCC options.

> Overall, it's a light hybrid of original WEG D6, hit with a light dusting of modern narrativist game design. That's just intended to appeal directly to me.

You can pick up a copy directly off of the Wargate Books store, right over here:

The system itself first showed up in a RPG called *[Supers!](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/130108/supers-revised-edition)* which doesn't have a huge footprint, but you can have a copy at a very reasonable price off of DriveThruRPG.
Frankly, aside from the meme value, I don't see any real reason to want to run *Forgotten Ruin* using OSR/D&D mechanics. It's funny because it's the same mechanics as found in a lot of fantasy, but it's not designed for that kind of play.
Super6 just works better to drive the themes and get the real feel of what should be happening.
Now there are a couple of other options you could take. There's the *[Forgotten Ruin Adventure Wargame](https://modiphius.net/en-us/pages/five-leagues-from-the-borderlands)* from Modiphius, which I absolutely adore as well. That takes the focus and puts it more on tactical adventure wargaming with minis on a map, which is also incredibly suitable for the themes and styling of *Forgotten Ruin*. If you haven't seen that, you should check that out too.
I find it hilarious that they have the promo bit for it underneath their *[[Five Leagues from the Borderlands]]* link. They clearly know who the target demographic is for this game, and they aren't afraid or ashamed of it. They're absolutely right.
Now, if I were going to pull out all the stops and get hardcore crunchy with it, what I'd probably do is make a conversion to *[[Twilight 2000]]*, which is a fantastic milsim tabletop RPG with enough crunch on the mechanical side to make any gun bunny happy. It wouldn't take a whole lot of modification, especially since there is a third-party supplement for it called *[Through the Silver Gate](https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/492856/through-the-silver-gate-a-new-alt-campaign-for-twilight-2000)*, which does a good chunk of the heavy lifting. But that would be actual work, and both of these other games already exist and have beautiful books.
This has been your one-stop shop for all of your *Forgotten Ruin* RPG needs.
