# Blacklight for Shadowdark: Modern Military Horror, Again
tags: #thoughts
Look, I have a weakness, and I know I have a weakness. It's okay.

I am perfectly happy to admit that when it comes to games about military action and cosmic horror, I am the demographic. I'm the target audience. I am the guy who will pick up nearly everything. It started long before **[[Delta Green]]** and it will proceed long into the future. Yes, I have a copy of **[[FIST (Freelance Infantry Strike Team)|FIST]]**. No, I am not ashamed of that fact. Basically, if you give me the opportunity to put a military operation up against terrifying horrors from beyond sane time and space, I'm your huckleberry.
Now it's important to note that I have absolutely no interest in the game **[[Shadowdark]]**. None. Absolutely zero.
It is very deliberately a complete throwback **[[Dungeons and Dragons|D&D]]** fantasy heartbreaker.
It is effectively opposed to every single thing that I am interested in in modern tabletop role-playing games. I don't mind if you enjoy it. I consider it a step up over **Dungeons & Dragons** itself, but only just. I *do* like the cover of the hardback, though. That's quite attractive. Pity about the contents.
Now [the **Blacklight** Kickstarter](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scryingdutchman/blacklight-for-shadowdark-rpg) has been put in front of me, and I have emotional conflict about all of this.
On the one hand, it's a military against supernatural horror game/supplement, and that's entirely in my personal bailiwick. I love that stuff just for the fluff content alone.
On the other hand, it's for **Shadowdark**, which I have absolutely no interest in mechanically or structurally. It does nothing I want to do.
So what's an evil genius to do? On the one hand, the video promises that just for the PDF of **Blacklight**, it'll only run €9. That's not a huge amount of money to be out of pocket, even for something that I will just be reading for the fluff and maybe to steal some ideas from. On the other hand, that's a lot more than I can get an ePub novel for in the same genre.
Is it worthwhile? Maybe not. It seems a little pricey for what I might get. The layout is very deliberately retro and not in a way that tickles the tiny bits of graphic artist that hide inside my brain. It looks like it's formatted for 8.5x11, which I have even less interest in these days.
But it's modern military versus supernatural.
Do I need it? *Absolutely not.* Am I likely to use it? *Absolutely not.* Am I intrigued despite myself?
Sadly, absolutely.
I feel like this is one of those things that I should sit down and figure out how to write up using **[[Ironsworn - Starforged|Starforged]]** because all the tools are there to do it. I'm actually surprised that I haven't seen a third-party modern conversion of the game, which would be perfect for this.
Decisions, decisions.
