> The fellow book lover in the Grand Market near the coffee stall of Yamir smiled and said to me…
>
> “Among the whispering sands and hushing winds of Zephyran, West of Mysterion, there lies a strange and ancient road.
>
> Now of course you know of the many tales of Wali Baba the Boy Thief and his magic gorilla Hunq-a-Butter, as do all children and sages. Delights. Yarns, of course. But they are true and there once was such a daring lad who had many such grand and wonderful-filled adventures, and in-deed even became a rogue and a pirate, and one day… a king.
>
> But have you never read the mysterious tale of Wali Baba and the Night Road?
>
> For connoisseurs of such adventures it is the best of the best of all those great tales of that particularly delightful scoundrel, Wali Baba.
>
> In this one, Wali pursues the Dreaming Djinn along a magic road through the Waystes of Zûn and finds himself at the fabled Bottle of the City of Brass where he rescues the daughter of the Efreeti Prince and breaks the Curse of the Singing Scimitar.
>
> Oh yes, if you are ever in Percia the Golden, seek the Street of Dead Ends and Lost Dreams where the booksellers hoard their dusty offerings. And if they have a copy of that particular fantastic tale… then you simply must pay any price they demand, for it is the best of them and you will find yourself on that strange and wonderful magic road deep in the starlit dark of ancient Zûn. With daring Wali Baba, caught up in another adventure.
>
> A good book is like that… it will take you farther than any magic carpet ever will. Trust me, my friend, you will never forget it.”
I keep a tentacle tucked into my pocket so that when a particular setting comes along, I have the tools. **Arabian Nights Adventures** is [free in the Loner SRD](https://lonersrd.zotiquestgames.com/geared_towards_loner/arabian_nights_adventures.html), and it plugs straight into **[[Loner]]**.
> [!info] **Jamal al-Mu'izz** — *the one who arrives when you forget a name*
>
> **Concept:** Jinn — Keeper of Forgotten Names, of smokeless fire, older than the caliphate.
>
> **Skills:**
> - **Truth-Seeker** — hears the name underneath the name you gave him.
> - **Chronicler of Dynasties** — remembers what every house promised, and the night it broke it.
>
> **Frailty:**
> - **Heart Tossed by the Winds** — his moods turn with the weather; no vow of his survives a change of wind.
>
> **Gear:**
> - **Oud Strung With His Own Hair** — played, it gives a listener back a name they had lost.
> - **Slim-Bladed Brass Dagger** — cuts knots, seals, and words off a page; it will not cut a living tongue.
>
> **Goal:** Find the true name worn off his seal.
>
> **Motive:** A nameless jinn is only a shape and a mood, and moods blow away.
>
> **Nemesis:** The Seal-Maker's Heirs — the brass-founders of Homs who still keep the plaster matrix.
>
> **Luck: 6**

Tools for managing character generation and formatting at hand all the time as well?
I'm not ashamed of it.
Yes, you could actually play this genie, or just have him as an NPC that shows up in your game. Either way, whatever makes you happy.
**The lifepath rolls did a lot of the heavy lifting.** *Born under a false identity* is literal for a jinn: the seal bears a name, and it isn't his. *Witnessed someone disappear mid-sentence* is the kicker[^1] — a man was about to speak his own true name and was gone before the last syllable. That is why he coaxes names out of people instead of demanding them, and why his mischief has a limit: he has never killed anyone. He *has* ruined several afternoons.
**Where the myth lives.** He is *nar as-samum*, smokeless fire, and he sits where such things sit — thresholds, wells, ruins, the shaded side of a wall at noon. Salt makes him polite; cold iron makes him leave. Names are *his thing*: Solomon's binding, the seal, the true name as the handle on a thing. He tells the truth constantly, which is his mischief — *Truth-Seeker* plus *Chronicler of Dynasties* means he will recite word-for-word what you swore on your father's grave, in your voice, at the exact worst moment, in front of the exact right people.
**Playing him.** He bargains and never destroys — the *Jinn Bargains* table is his natural habitat, and his frailty means he genuinely forgets his side of a bargain by sunset, which is a problem for a bargainer and free comedy at the table. The phrase he can't stop writing is the half-legible line off his seal; have him scrawl it on walls, on the insides of lamps, in the margins of other people's books. It is either his name or a warning. Figuring out which could be the basis for an entire campaign.
