**the Burning Wheel Codex** is the companion volume to **[[the Burning Wheel]]**, and if the core book is a Swiss watch, this is the spare-parts catalog — everything the six-hundred-page rulebook alluded to and neglected, finally bolted on. The front matter cheerfully swears it contains no new material; the back half hands you a brand-new playable stock, five fresh lifepath sets, and a magic system's worth of grimoire pages. It is a "greatest hits" album for the wheel, and it is gloriously overstuffed.
## Setting
The Codex doesn't add a setting so much as it gives you the tools to refuse to need one. The front half, the **Adventure Burner**, is a framework for building your own worlds and situations and for running the game long enough for them to matter. The lifepath section does the worldbuilding its own way, through culture-as-mechanics: the **Roden**, a new playable stock of rodent-kin whose faith in the goddess Aecer splits them between the devout of the Fields and the exiled who claw out a life Below; **Dark Elves** on the Path of Spite; **Trolls** and **Great Wolves**; and the whole apparatus for a **Wizard** campaign. These are the cultures the wheel expects you to invent, delivered ready-made.
## Mechanics
The Codex doesn't replace the core — it deepens it, adding breadth and new spokes to the hub rather than rewriting the turn of the wheel. The meat falls into a few buckets.
### The Adventure Burner
The **Burning Philosophy** essays codify what the game believes: fight for what you believe, "we think life should be hard," and the Belief → Action → Reward currency cycle that turns testing into advancement into more Beliefs. The **Adventure Burner** proper provides a framework for creating worlds, situations, and antagonists, plus the "More Bloody Rules" that keep long campaigns turning.
### The Commentary
The bulk of the book is an enormous, sprawling essay collection in which Luke Crane talks through actually running the wheel: table behavior, running the game, situation commentary, building beliefs and instincts, the artha cycle, trait votes, intent and task, advancement, practice, obstacles, versus tests, help, linked tests, let it ride, shades, resources, circles, duel of wits, range and cover, fight, injury, and monsters. It is the "here's how you don't choke" text.
### The Arcane Library
Magic finally gets room to breathe — a trove covering the roles of magic, corruption, practical magic, religion, art magic, enchanting, spirit binding, summoning, death art, folklore, and blood magic. This is where the summoning and necromantic rules the core book gestured at but never delivered actually live.
### Magical Artifacts
A collection of artifacts for wizards and anyone unlucky enough to loot one.
### New Lifepaths
Five new lifepath sets: the **Wizard Burner**, **Dark Elves** (the Path of Spite — home to the outcast necromancer), **Roden**, **Trolls**, and **Great Wolves**, rounded out with monstrous trait and skill lists.
## Editions
The Codex's contents weren't new in 2023 — they were scavenged. For **[[the Burning Wheel|Burning Wheel]]** Revised, in the mid-2000s, BWHQ published the **Adventure Burner**, **Commentary**, **Magic Burner**, and **Monster Burner** as separate handbooks. The Codex (first edition, 2023, Fontocalypse printing, with corrections) collects, revises, and refines them into a single companion for Gold Revised. *In the library.* There's no separate Codex edition to chase; its history is really the spread of sourcebooks it consolidates.
