# Wraith: The Great War tags: #game/rpg/wraith ![[Wraith - The Great War (cover).jpg|600]] **Wraith: The Great War** is the period sourcebook for **[[Wraith the Oblivion|Wraith: The Oblivion]]** that drags the Restless Dead into the trenches of the First World War — the game's answer to *Vampire: The Dark Ages*, in the tradition of turning a whole game line loose on a historical era. It's the World War I book for a game about ghosts, which is to say it's about the single largest, most industrialized mass death the world had ever seen, told from the side of the people who didn't get to leave. The book runs from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand through the "Twilight Era," a period of the Underworld's history the modern game only gestures at. ## Setting The Great War has come to the Underworld. The **Fourth Great Maelstrom** — a psychic storm that ravages the dead — begins in 1916, with its largest eruption at the Somme battlefield, a Nihil that remains Europe's most terrible sinkhole into Oblivion. In the skies overhead, ghostly pilots dogfight shrieking Spectres; the gates of the Necropoli slam shut as the death-roads of Europe teem with un-Reaped souls. At the heart of the empire of the dead, a traitor works to topple what Oblivion never could: civil war erupts across Stygia, the **Grim Legion** rebels, and **Charon** — the one wraith who could save it all — vanishes, traveling in disguise through the deadlands of a Europe at war. The dead pour in from the killing fields, and the war, the Spanish flu, and the collapse of empires reshape the hierarchy of the dead from top to bottom. ## Mechanics It's the same **Storyteller System** d10 dice pool as the core game — Corpus, Pathos, Angst, Passions, Fetters, and the Arcanoi — tuned to a wartime chronicle. The period setting brings new Arcanoi, new threats (including the Generals of Oblivion and their spectre armies), and a historical frame that gives the usual ghostly politics a very different, much bleaker texture.
