# World of Darkness
tags: #game/rpg/world-of-darkness
The **World of Darkness** is a gothic-punk roleplaying game line that lets players embrace their inner monsters, because apparently being human isn't angsty enough. From bloodsucking vampires to howling werewolves, there's a flavor of supernatural drama for everyone's taste.
The core mechanic across the line uses the Storyteller System, where players roll a pool of ten-sided dice, typically combining an Attribute and a Skill. Any die showing 8, 9, or 10 counts as a success, with more successes indicating better results. It's like playing yahtzee, but with more existential dread.
The original **World of Darkness** (oWoD) began in 1991 with **Vampire: The Masquerade** and expanded to include other supernaturals. In 2004, White Wolf rebooted the line with the "New World of Darkness" (nWoD), later renamed **Chronicles of Darkness**. This new iteration streamlined rules and separated the game lines, allowing for easier crossover play. Because nothing says "cohesive storytelling" like throwing vampires, werewolves, and mages into the same blender.
In 2011, the 20th Anniversary editions of the classic World of Darkness games were released, bringing updated rules and nostalgia in equal measure. Then, in 2018, the fifth edition of **Vampire: The Masquerade** marked a return to the original World of Darkness setting, proving that even in death, some things refuse to stay buried.
