**Vampire: The Masquerade V6 Playtest Player Packet** — the sixth edition of **[[Vampire - the Masquerade|Vampire: The Masquerade]]** — arrives as an alpha playtest, which is the hobby's way of selling you the privilege of doing the developers' quality-assurance work for free. Announced at Gen Con 2026 and playable on Demiplane, this "Player Packet" is proudly incomplete — placeholder terms sit in brackets, half the clans are marked "[in development]," and the whole thing is stamped "Rules Not Final." It's a love letter to the Storyteller System, which is marketing-speak for "we'd like to undo some of V5." It is not backwards compatible with the fifth edition, so the edition sprawl continues apace.
The core resolution is a d10 dice pool built from **Attribute + Skill − Difficulty**. The headline change: Difficulty now *subtracts dice* from your pool rather than raising a target number, so a hard task shrinks your handful of dice instead of asking for higher rolls. Any die showing 8 or higher is a success; extra successes matter in conflicts. Roll no 8+ and at least one 1 and you suffer a **painful failure**, forcing you to **Choose Your Pain** — lose 3 Vitae or Willpower, dump your Quickening, mark your Beast tracker, or hand the Storyteller a Drama. Players roll almost all the dice at the table, with the Storyteller acting as arbiter rather than dice-roller.
Two meta-currencies carry the new economy. **Quickening** is the player resource: you earn it by rolling 10s, and spend it to add dice to a roll or buy a basic success (capped at 5). **Drama** is the Storyteller's resource, gained from player actions and spent to complicate the scene. On a failed test you can also propose a **Devil's Bargain** — accept a complication and turn the failure into a success, once per scene.
The biggest structural change is the resource shuffle. Health and Blood Points are merged into a single **Vitae** pool (10 + Stamina), while **Willpower** (5 + Composure + Resolve) is the mental/social counterpart. Physical conflict damages Vitae; social conflict damages Willpower, and both share one unified conflict procedure. Fire and sunlight deal **baneful damage** that permanently (until mended) cuts your maximum Vitae. The old Humanity track becomes a two-sided **Humanity Scale** with a Beast (Monstrous) tracker and a Nature (Mortal) tracker, each five boxes that fill as you indulge or suppress that side; fill one and you risk a Beast frenzy or an outburst. Character creation runs through lifepaths, natures, clan traits, and merits, with Disciplines now scaling with dots and favoring active use over passive powers.
