# The Long Stair
One of my favorite long-term, long-existing concepts that originated on [[RPGnet]]. Effectively a massive What If:
> What if dimensional portals which simply look like concrete stairways that descend into the earth but which opened into "the Dungeon" appeared in the modern world? How would modern nation-states with modern military and military technologies respond? How can you blend the classic tropes of fantasy dungeon diving with modern special forces?
Really, it's brilliant.
The focus of the threads is on people going into the Dungeon, what they find there, and what they bring back. There's a lot about military units, scientists experimenting on crazy shit, and related topics.
In many ways, it's like a lot of **Stargate: SG1** episodes. There's a base. The soldiers leave the base to go to a strange world. The stuff that happens is focused either on the strange other worlds or on the base. Sometimes they get out into the world because aliens attacked Earth or something, but that's not really the focus of the show. The majority of the show doesn't even really need to be happening on Earth at all; it could really be happening anywhere, because the main characters spend their off time at the base for many of the episodes.
