_Star Trek Adventures_ is the tabletop RPG that boldly goes where no game has gone before, except for the countless other _Star Trek_ games that have done it before. It’s the latest attempt to capture the essence of the _Star Trek_ universe, where diplomacy often trumps phaser battles, and the Prime Directive is more of a guideline than an actual rule. Players get to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and occasionally argue over the replicator menu.
**Core Die Resolution Mechanics:**
The game utilizes the 2d20 system, which is about as straightforward as a Klingon poetry reading. Players roll two twenty-sided dice aiming to score under a target number, which is the sum of an attribute and a skill. Successes generate Momentum, which can be used for immediate benefits, or saved up to make the GM’s life harder later on. Failures can add to the Threat pool, giving the GM fuel to throw complications at the crew, like an unexpected visit from Q or a warp core breach on laundry day.
**Editions Comparison:**
The second edition of _Star Trek Adventures_ is like the remastered version of the original series: shinier, with more lens flares. It promises a more streamlined experience, updated rules, and the chance to play as a wider variety of species, including Cardassians, Ferengi, and even Orions. If you thought the first edition was as chaotic as a Tribble infestation, the second edition aims to tidy things up while still keeping the spirit of adventure alive.

# Captain's Log
![[Star Trek Adventures - Captains Log.jpg]]
**Star Trek Adventures: Captain’s Log** - a game where you can boldly go solo into the depths of space, or at least pretend to while sitting at your kitchen table. This 326-page tome offers a **streamlined 2d20 system** for all your spacefaring needs, whether you’re a lone wolf or prefer the company of fellow Trekkies without the hassle of a gamemaster.
The core die resolution mechanics? It’s all about the **2d20 system**, which is about as straightforward as a Klingon poetry slam. You roll two twenty-sided dice, aiming to score under a target number that’s a combination of your character’s attribute and skill. The number of successes you rack up determines how well you do, whether you’re trying to outmaneuver a Romulan Warbird or sweet-talk a Vulcan.
As for editions, they’ve made it easy: the cover art is the only difference, so pick your favorite Star Trek era and get the same content whether you’re a fan of **The Original Series**, **The Next Generation**, **Deep Space Nine**, or **Discovery**.

> One Weird Fact: The Modiphius 2D20 System really reminds me of **[[Ironsworn]]** and **[[Ironsworn - Starforged|Starforged]]** in a weird way.
>
> You commonly roll 2D10 versus a stat plus any adds and compare the total to each of the dice independently in order to generate a strong hit, a hit, or a miss.
>
> 2D20 effectively works the same way, except with a larger linear range, which means that small differences don't mean quite as much.
>
> I'm not sure I'm completely on board with the way the stats fall out, but I don't hate it.

> As for why I picked up **Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Chair**?

> Do you think that any kind of space-based solo TTRPG with streamlined mechanics of a sort I already like would escape my grasp? You would be terribly wrong.
