It's the "world build" book — the one that turns the wargame's TOG-versus-Commonwealth war into a setting with a society, careers, and enough aliens to staff a circus. The cover says it all: a grav tank riding a burning battlefield with a soldier braced on the hull, firing back at the sky. ## Setting The core of it is the **Terran Overlord Government (TOG)** at war with the **Commonwealth** and its defector allies, the **Renegade Legions** — the civil war that splits the human race down the middle. But Legionnaire spends its real effort on the texture around that war: a decadent TOG society with its clubs and its Centurions' Club and its slave camps, and the Commonwealth's more egalitarian (but no less martial) culture. The book adds a set of playable alien species that give the setting its strange edges. The **KessRith** are a proud, brutal warrior race who once conquered humanity (alongside the **Ssora**) and who organize themselves strictly in groups of four. The **Menelvagorean** are tall, blue-skinned, bony-plated folk. The **Vauvusar** are four-armed bipedal aliens with tails and chest-set eyes. Throw in the **Baufrin**, the **Naram**/B'ekkal, and baseline humans, and you've got a roster where every species has its own stat curve, quirks, and relationship to the war. A KessRith gets a chunky Strength bonus; a Vauvusar's brain is in its chest, which matters an awful lot once the shooting starts. ## Mechanics Character creation runs on two ten-sided dice. You either **roll 2D10** for each of the eight primary attributes — Agility, Charisma, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Luck, Speed, and Strength — or **allocate a pool of 88 points** across them (capped between 5 and 17). From there you layer on subjective attributes (name, species, allegiance, career path, starting age) and the special attributes of **Edge** and **Prestige** — the second one being where the TOG's military rank and social standing actually live. Resolution is a skill-and-attribute engine: a skill's level adds to the relevant attribute to set a **target number**, and you roll against it. Skilled characters can **stack** multiple skills onto a single problem when the reasoning is sound — the book is generous with that, and leaves the final call to the GM. The military framing runs deep: you pick an allegiance (TOG, Commonwealth, or Renegade Legions), a service branch, and a career path, and the system is happy to walk you through a military career from enlistment to retirement back into civilian life. Combat is gritty and location-specific — you roll hit locations and differences in anatomy actually matter, so a species-specific hit table isn't decoration, it's the rules being honest about what a four-armed alien chest-brain means. ## Editions - **1990** — *Renegade Legion: Legionnaire*, FASA.
