**Centurion: Blood and Steel** is the grav-tank wargame at the heart of FASA's **[[Renegade Legion]]** line — the game whose box promised, on the back cover, that your life expectancy is less than two minutes. It's ground combat writ large: antigravity armor skimming the battlefield at hundreds of kilometers an hour, Gauss cannons and anti-vehicle missiles trading fire, and record sheets that track every piece of armor on a tank until the armor runs out and the crew finds out what's underneath.
## Setting
Same universe as the rest of the line: the **Terran Overlord Government (TOG)** grinding against the **Commonwealth** and the defected **Renegade Legions**. A TOG **Strike Legion** is built mostly of medium grav armor cohorts; a **Century** under a **Centurion** is the fighting unit you actually steer into a fight. The flavor is pure parade-ground sci-fi — Legions, Cohorts, Centuries, and Latin mottoes for units like the "Blood Eagles."
The machines are the draw. **Grav tanks** come in light, medium, and heavy classes — TOG mainliners include the **Horatius** (medium) and **Aeneas** (light), with **Romulus**/**Lupis** as the grav-APC chassis. The Commonwealth counters with the **Liberator** (medium) and **Wolverine** (light). They mount **shielding** on top of armor — a thin energy wave that makes a hit far less lethal — and pack crystalline-titanium armor, redundant circuitry, and self-repair systems. When they hit, they hit with **Gauss cannons**, anti-vehicle missiles, AP lasers, and Vulcan anti-missile defenses.
## Mechanics
A turn runs through a clean **sequence of play**: initiative, movement, combat, end. Movement is where the game gets its blood and steel: tanks have **facing**, **acceleration**, and **velocity**, so you're managing momentum, not just hex-to-hex shuffling. Tanks can go hull-down, ground, and — if they push past the speed limit — find out what that does to their stability.
Combat is a layered **to-hit → hit-location → damage** engine. You build a to-hit number from range, firing arc, and modifiers; if you clear it, you roll **hit location** (front, side, turret, stern, bottom); then you consult the **damage template**, eating through **armor** and then **internal damage** once the plating is gone. Special weapons — ballistic Gauss cannons, anti-vehicle missiles, indirect fire — have their own rules. Infantry, bounce infantry, buildings, and vehicle crewmen who bail out of a burning tank round out the combined-arms picture.
## Editions
- **1st Edition** — *Centurion: Blood and Steel*, FASA; the copy in the library. *In the library.*
- **2nd Edition** — FASA; minor rules changes and an upgrade from cardboard miniatures to plastic figures.
- Later reprints under other labels share the basic concept and some names with the original but little else (the "Budgie Smuggler" edition).
