**Other Suns** is a science-fiction role-playing game published by Fantasy Games Unlimited (FGU) in 1983. This game lets you live out your wildest “Pets in Space” fantasies, featuring a dozen alien races that resemble humanoid Earth animals like cats, foxes, and bears. If you’ve ever wanted to be a telepathic fox person, this is your chance.
## Core Die Resolution Mechanics
The core mechanics of **Other Suns** revolve around a percentile system. Players roll two ten-sided dice (d100) to determine the outcome of actions, aiming to roll under their skill or attribute level. This means that if your character has a 75% skill in “Laser Pistol,” you need to roll 75 or lower to hit your target. Simple, right? Well, not quite. The game also includes modifiers for difficulty, situational factors, and the occasional “special hit” or “fumble” that can make things interesting—or infuriating, depending on your perspective.
## Editions and Changes
**Other Suns** has had a few iterations, but the core mechanics have remained largely the same. The original 1983 edition came as a boxed set with a 72-page book, a 64-page book, a cardstock gamemaster’s screen, and a sample character sheet. A supplement, **Alderson Yards Shipbook**, was published in 1986, adding more spaceship design options and rules. Despite these additions, the game has retained its complex character creation and combat systems, which some might call “detailed” and others might call "excruciatingly tedious".
