# Nihilation tags: #game/rpg/nihilation ![[Nihilation (cover).jpg|600]] **Nihilation** is a solo journaling RPG by Jason Christopher Burrows that thrusts you into a desolate world ravaged by an unspecified apocalypse. You play as a lone wanderer, stripped of your past, navigating the remnants of a shattered reality. Essentially, it's the introspective, melancholic cousin of **Fallout** who spends their days writing in their diary instead of looting abandoned buildings. Now, for the actual mechanics: Instead of fiddling with complex tables or assigning actions to specific numbers, **Nihilation** employs a refreshingly straightforward 2d6 system. But here's the twist: your approach to a situation matters. Every action you take is filtered through one of three approaches: Aggressive, Thoughtful, or Expressive. Each approach grants a bonus (or potentially a penalty) to your roll. So, if you're feeling particularly reckless and decide to charge headfirst into a crumbling ruin (Aggressive), you might get a +2 bonus to your roll. But if you're opting for a more cautious, introspective approach (Thoughtful), you might only get a +1. Once you've determined your approach, you roll 2d6, add your approach modifier, and compare the result to three thresholds: - **10+:** Hope. Things are looking up, at least for now. - **7-9:** Gloom. Success is uncertain, and the path ahead is murky. - **2-6:** Despair. Well, this is awkward. Prepare for the worst. And of course, each action has different outcomes based on whether you roll Hope, Gloom, or Despair. Because even in the apocalypse, there's always a chance for things to go spectacularly wrong. ### References - [Nihilation by Jason Christopher Burrows - Itch.io](https://eucatastrophic.itch.io/nihilation)
