It's the line's grimmest fantasy and it takes the "magic is rare, feared, and costly" part seriously. ## Setting The setting is a dark, gritty, mythic land: ancient ruins, corrupt cities, and lawless wild frontiers where magic is rare and dangerous. The book lays out the aesthetics and tone up front — this is meant to feel unforgiving — then gets into characters and a proper sorcery subsystem. Companions and followers show up to keep you from being quite so alone, and optional rules extend the grim survival loop. It's the classic "the road ahead is shadowed with peril" fantasy, and it lets you be a cursed-blade hero rather than a reluctant farmhand. ## Mechanics The core is the shared Loner Oracle — roll a Chance die against a Risk die for yes/no, read ties as "Yes, but…," tick the Twist Counter. Steel & Sorcery adds a real **sorcery subsystem** where casting is dangerous and costs something, plus **companions and followers** to give the lone wanderer a little backup, and **optional rules** for tightening the game's teeth.
