**Loner: Dungeoneer** is the dungeon-crawling dial on **[[Loner]]**, and it might be the version that finally gets the tag-based engine out of the "quiet introspection" lane and into a hole in the ground. Same Chance-vs-Risk oracle, same qualitative tags instead of stats — but now those tags are things like "Expert Trapspringer" and "Relentless Scout," and the goal is to go down into ancient forgotten ruins full of peril and unearthed riches and come back out the other side.
## Setting
There's no grand world here; there's a dungeon. Ancient, forgotten, littered with traps and monsters and untold treasure. The design principles are on proud display before a single room is mapped: portable (a few six-sided dice and writing materials, nothing else essential), rules-light (a single solving mechanic, easy to learn and eventually memorize), and tag-based (characters and situations defined only by qualitative descriptors). Dungeoneer is an exploration-focused trip downward where the Oracle generates the rooms, the features, the encounters, and the mood, and you decide what to risk.
## Mechanics
The core is the shared Loner Oracle. What Dungeoneer layers on is the dungeon-crawl loop itself:
- **Tactical navigation** — moving through rooms and corridors, choosing routes, and letting the tables decide what lies around the corner.
- **Resource management** — light sources, supplies, and the slow grinding down of what you brought, because a dungeon is a survival problem wearing a fantasy coat.
- **Emergent storytelling** — the Oracle answers the closed questions ("Is the door trapped?," "Does something move in the dark?") and the story assembles itself from your decisions and the rolls.
It's a system-light, exploration-focused solo crawl that keeps the fiction-first Loner bones while giving you a reason to keep a torch lit and a map in your pocket. The hobby's love affair with the dungeon is well-served here, because the whole thing fits in a pocket and threatens no one's evening.
