**Ironsworn: Lodestar** is Shawn Tomkin's free, table-ready reference guide for **[[Ironsworn]]** — the thing you actually bring to the table when you don't feel like hauling the core book. Where the main rulebook is full explanations and setting prose, Lodestar is pure utility: the complete move set, the oracle tables, and the essentials condensed into a compact booklet built to be grabbed mid-session. The hobby loves to sell you a "companion guide" and charge you for the privilege; Lodestar, true to the Ironsworn line's ethos, is genuinely free, licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA. And it's first-party, not a fan's crib: the same Shawn Tomkin who wrote Ironsworn is the one who distilled his own game into this booklet, and the expanded edition is his update to the reference.
## What's Inside
The guide is organized into three reference sections:
- **Moves Compendium** — the complete set of moves from **Ironsworn** and its **[[Ironsworn - Delve|Delve]]** expansion gathered into one place: adventure, journey, scene challenge, quest, fate, relationship, combat, suffer, delve, failure, threat, and rarity moves, each annotated with its source page reference. Progress moves (the ones that roll against a progress track) are marked with an asterisk, and move names are italicized where one move invokes another.
- **Gameplay Codex** — the "how do I actually get going" bit: setting info, getting-started procedures, a rules summary, and a glossary of game terms, plus **prelude events**, a random generator for character backgrounds.
- **Oracle Omnibus** — the oracle tables from **Ironsworn** and **Delve**, expanded for locations, people, and settlements, with combat-scene and mystic-effect tables thrown in — the standard way to ask the world a question and get an honest answer back.
## The 2025 Expanded Edition
The current edition updates and expands the original 2019 release: a fuller move compendium including Delve, move variations and options, an illustrated map of the Ironlands, prelude events, revised and expanded core/settlement/character/location oracles, Delve's sites, threats, and monstrosities, and new combat-scene and mystic-effect tables.
One detail worth knowing before you reach the table: the expanded edition puts an **upfront Pay the Price table** straight into the move text, and it's notably fiction-first — mechanical impact is less than half the results, with the rest being positional and fictional consequences. If you find yourself grinding your character's Health and Spirit into the dirt (a documented Ironsworn habit), this is the edition that politely points you elsewhere.
