# GURPS tags: #game/rpg/gurps **GURPS** — the Generic Universal RolePlaying System — is Steve Jackson's 1986 answer to "but what if we just had *one* set of rules?" and the hobby's most successful attempt to make a single engine run every genre it's ever dreamed up. It's the universal system that treats realism and research as a feature: you don't buy a setting, you bolt one on, and the core is built to survive contact with any of them. Nearly forty years on, it's still the dependable, slightly square chassis the hobby reaches for when a niche game doesn't exist — and it probably does exist as a GURPS sourcebook. ## The System There's no fixed world, by design: GURPS is deliberately genre-agnostic, a point-buy engine meant to be pointed at whatever you like. Its secret weapon is a fetish for **reality-checking** — real-world measurements, sensible ranges and weights, research that makes a historical or military campaign feel researched — so a fantasy wizard and a cyberpunk hacker run on the same honest physics underneath. The line sprawls over dozens of worldbooks and sourcebooks covering science fiction, fantasy, horror, historical eras, and everything between. The game even made real-world history: a 1990 Secret Service raid on Steve Jackson Games over *GURPS Cyberpunk* directly fueled the founding of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. ## Mechanics The engine is deceptively simple: **3d6**, roll at or under your skill or attribute target. Characters are built with **character points** — you buy a set of four base stats, **Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Health**, then layer on **advantages, disadvantages, perks, quirks, and skills**. Combat is crunchy and consequential, with defenses, damage, and health tracking, and the whole thing runs on the same d6 bell curve no matter the setting. **GURPS Lite**, a free intro, is the gentlest doorway into a system famous for its depth. ## Editions - **GURPS** (1985–2004) — first published in 1985 as *Man to Man*, then the 1st/2nd edition boxed set (1986), 3rd edition (1988), and **4th edition** (2004, revised by Sean "Dr. Kromm" Punch and David Pulver). A revised 4th Edition was teased for 2026. *Not in the library.* ## References - [GURPS — Steve Jackson Games](https://www.sjgames.com/gurps/) - [GURPS — Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GURPS)
