**Fudge** is the role-playing game system that decided rules are more like guidelines, really. Designed by Steffan O’Sullivan and first published in 1992, this game is the ultimate DIY toolkit for RPG enthusiasts who think traditional systems are just too mainstream. It’s a universal system, meaning you can use it for any genre, setting, or level of chaos you desire.
## Core Die Resolution Mechanics
The core mechanics of **Fudge** revolve around its unique dice system, because why use regular dice when you can invent your own? Players use Fudge dice, which are six-sided dice marked with two plus signs (+), two minus signs (-), and two blank sides. When you roll four of these dice, you get a result ranging from -4 to +4. This result is then added to a character’s skill level, which is described in words like “Great” or “Terrible” because numbers are for squares. The final result determines the degree of success or failure in a task, with outcomes ranging from “Superb” to “Terrible.”
## Editions and Changes
The original 1992 edition of **Fudge** was a freeform, rules-light system that encouraged players to make up their own rules. The 1995 edition, published by Grey Ghost Press, added more structure and examples, but still left plenty of room for customization. The **10th Anniversary Edition** in 2005 introduced even more optional rules and a basic fantasy build, because apparently, some people need a little more hand-holding.
