The tactics are as thick as the foliage and survival is the cruelest jest the tour has to offer, for a squad of grunts who aren't all guaranteed to make it home. ## Setting You command a squad of grunts through its tour in the Vietnam War — US Army and Marines, ARVN, indigenous troops, special forces, against the NVA and Viet Cong. It's a period piece first: the book name-checks the real command structure and the reality of patrol, ambush, and firefight. The game scales from a squad to company level if you're feeling particularly masochistic, and it's built around the THW engine's signature uncertainty — you never know what's in the bush until it's already shooting at you. ## Mechanics It runs on the standard **Chain Reaction / THW Reaction System**: **Reputation** with **2d6 taken-versus-Rep**, Stars and Grunts, the **In Sight** reaction test instead of I-go-you-go, and the reaction tables that decide whether your men hold, break, or put their heads down. What sets **FNG** apart is the firepower — artillery and airstrikes on call, and a full accounting of infantry weapons from the M16 on down. ## Editions - **FNG** (1st edition) — the original. *In the library.* - **FNG: 2nd Tour** (2012, by Darby Eckles) — the current edition, streamlining the mechanics and kicking up the realism; *In the library.* ## Supplements *All in the library.* - **FNG: Platoon Missions** — a platoon-level scenario supplement (Darby Eckles). - **FNG: Roll of the Dice** (2025, Ed Teixeira) — the later scenario/campaign supplement in the line. - **FNG: Roll of the Dice – Ratted Out** (2026) — a supplementary rule/scenario sheet for Roll of the Dice. ## References - [FNG 2nd Tour — Rebel Minis](https://rebelminispress.com/products/fng-2nd-tour-pdf) - [FNG 2nd Edition — Noble Knight](https://www.nobleknight.com/P/2147470536/FNG---The-Game-of-Man-to-Man-Combat-During-the-Vietnam-War-2nd-Edition) - [FNG 1st Edition — Noble Knight](https://www.nobleknight.com/P/2147391157/FNG---The-Game-of-Man-to-Man-Combat-During-the-Vietnam-War-1st-Edition)
