**Charnel Houses of Europe: The Shoah** is the Black Dog Game Factory sourcebook for **[[Wraith the Oblivion|Wraith: The Oblivion]]** — written by Jonathan Blacke and Robert Hatch, with a foreword by Janet Berliner and development by Richard Dansky — that takes the game's premise (you play the dead) and points it at the Holocaust. It's not a book about the Holocaust as a historical lecture, but about what the Shoah did to the Underworld: the wraiths and spectres who came out of the camps, and the way the worst atrocity in European history tore the land of the dead apart. It's the darkest book in a line already famous for being too dark to play, and, against all odds, it's eminently playable.
## Setting
During the Second World War, wayward souls reached the Shadowlands in unparalleled numbers — whole families breaching the Shroud from the camps and the death-roads of Europe, and the great Maelstrom of the war years ripping the Underworld into tatters. The book builds its chronicle around real places: the **Theresienstadt** ghetto (a shadow-citadel rebuilt by the dead), **Auschwitz**, **Babi Yar**, and the **Warsaw ghetto**. It threads this into the line's metaplot — the war's horrors unleash the **Fifth Great Maelstrom**, awaken the great Malfean **Gorool**, and lead to the sacrifice and disappearance of **Charon** himself — while the Holocaust wraiths bind together in a **Covenant of the Millions**, an opportunity for rebuilding, not just for the free camp wraiths but for all of Stygia.
## Mechanics
It's the same **Storyteller System** d10 dice pool as the core game — Corpus, Pathos, Angst, Passions, Fetters, and the Arcanoi — but the book's real content is its setting and scenarios. It's a sourcebook that uses the Wraith rules to tell stories about the legacy of the Shoah, with practical, playable material — environments, situations, plot hooks, and the faces of the dead who haunt them — rather than a grim sermon.
