# Beast of Kolkoris tags: #game/rpg/agon-beast-of-kolkoris **Beast of Kolkoris** is a **Spears & Glory** adventure for the original **[[Agon]]** from Lame Mage Productions — Ben Robbins's second free first-edition-era quest, and the one that turns the Theseus-and-minotaur myth on its head. The gods declare the Beast must die; the twist is that the Beast might not deserve to. It's Agon 1e's classical hubris and tragedy dialed up, where the monster of the quest carries the real conscience. ## Setting It is a time of celebration as the King of Iperna gives away his daughter in wedlock — but as the king prays in the Temple of Athena, the grey-eyed goddess's statue comes alive and denounces him: he gave his *first* daughter in sacrifice to the Beast of Kolkoris, defying the will of the gods. The Beast must die and its head set high on the promontory over the harbor. The old king turns to the heroes to do the gods' bidding. What the heroes don't know is that the Beast of Kolkoris is no man-eating monster lurking in a cave — it is a wise and virtuous creature who rules its kingdom with care and nobility, the rightful heir of the royal line of Kolkoris, born monstrous of a dying princess and locked in the palace's labyrinth. A tyrant in its youth until love tamed its heart, it now rules in peace and prosperity from the darkness of the labyrinth, hiding its face from the heavens in fear of divine punishment. The gods, as ever, do not forget. The quest runs five objectives — reach Kolkoris, learn about the Beast, reach the Beast, slay it, and bring its head to the cliff — with a real moral knot threaded through. ## Mechanics Running on the original Agon, it's **Strife**-based: five objectives, 25 Strife per hero, obstacle contests and recommended dice pools (e.g. volunteer for the quest at *Orate 2d6, no Strife*), and 1e **creative abilities** (Orate, Lore, Grace, Spirit) as the likely approaches.
