"If the Star Navy doesn't get you there, the Star Army never fights at all" — that's the pitch, delivered with a drill sergeant's patience in **5150: Star Navy**, the **[[5150 - Wargames]]** line's void half. Where the wargame side's ground games fight planet to planet, Star Navy hands you a squadron or an entire fleet and a simple job: sweep the stars of the enemy. It's ship-to-ship and fleet-to-fleet combat on the THW reaction engine, and it doesn't care who the enemy is so much as where they are.
## Setting
The fleets of the 5150 universe's factions — the human **Gaea Prime** navy and its rivals — ply the stars hunting pirates, flying the flag, and fighting whatever other **Factions and Races** are bent on turning the player's ships into debris. The fiction centers the campaign: you operate as a fleet commander under one of several powers, or even as a pirate running your own show. It's the same universe as **[[5150 - Star Army]]** — the book even opens on the Star Army motto — just aimed at the cold, wide black between planets instead of the mud of them.
## Mechanics
Star Navy runs the line's shared **THW Reaction System** — the **taken-versus-Rep** 2d6 roll and the reaction tests that fire when ships come into contact — scaled to ships instead of soldiers. Ships carry a stat block (**Class, Thrust, Hull, Firepower**), and fleet actions resolve through the usual tables, with **PEFs** generating enemy presence for solo and same-side play the same way they do on the ground. Beyond raw broadsides it covers **fighter operations**, **boarding attempts**, movement through **asteroid belts**, and the **post-battle aftermath**, with each faction responding to combat differently. A fleet-level **campaign system** ties it together, letting you rise through the ranks or run from the law as a pirate.
## Editions
- **5150: Star Navy** (original) — the standalone void/fleet-combat core. *In the library.*
- **Total War: Star Navy** — the Star Navy book in the **Total War** combined-arms re-issue and the current working edition of the fleet game, revised beyond the standalone core. *In the library.*
## The void corner
**5150: Star Navy** is the core void/fleet combat game; its two sister games each have their own page — **[[5150 - Fleet Commander]]** (the fleet-composition/command game built on the same ship-stat rosters) and **[[5150 - Carrier Command]]** (the carrier-operations campaign, Herrero & Cunningham).
**Supplements** (in the library):
- **Concentrated Fire & More** (2013, Mack Harrison & Teixeira) — tightens the gunnery and adds non-player tactical doctrine: how AI ships pick targets and return fire by ship class.
- **Evasive Manoeuvres / Optional Rules v1.1** (Vic Dobson) — the evasive-action rules: smaller ships burn a point of Thrust to juke and duck the heavier batteries.
- **Ship Tokens** — print-and-play ship tokens (Dreadnought, Battleship, Heavy Cruiser, Destroyer, Carrier, Fighters, and more).
