# RPG A DAY 2024: Memorable moment of play tags: #thoughts #thoughts/RPGaDay/2024 ![[RPGaDAY2024-024x723.jpg]] This is one of those, *"tell me about your character"* things, Isn't it? I've been conditioned over decades of going to conventions and game shops to never do that. Never. Nobody wants to hear about your character. Nobody really wants to hear stories about your games because *they only mean something to you*. Unless you are an excellent writer who is good at translating those experiences into readable, enjoyable contexts, just don't do it. Just don't. It's for the best. No one will feel as passionately as you do about all of the things that were on the line. No one will feel your personal investment. They might be impressed or pleased that you had that kind of experience, but they won't share it. So don't do it. Just don't. ![[ShadowRun (cover).jpg]] I *could* tell you about my MIT&M **[[Shadowrun|ShadowRun]]** character who was a double-dome magic and engineering professor with no actual magical ability.^[I always did have a taste for playing characters who might be theoretically useless but practically indispensable. It's a thing.] What he *did* have was a huge paycheck and summers off. During which he went on runs because he just was in it for the thrill. Buy an expensive blower craft for just a single use job? Sure! Which involved crashing through the front gates of a corporate outpost, screaming at the top of his lungs, and driving halfway up a building because *there was no way* he was going to parachute in on top of it. (The other characters were a little gung-ho in every situation about the parachuting. My character was afraid of heights. We can replace being gung-ho with money in every situation.) That was pretty memorable. I never had a good opportunity to use his ridiculous expertise in understanding magical theory, but in fairness this was high school. These days that would be a whole lot easier. It's a lot easier to empathize with a middle-aged man who does ridiculously stupid things purely for the thrill of it — for entirely unrelated reasons, I assure you. I certainly would not throw ridiculous amounts of money at buying almost meaningless things in order to create a greater sense of excitement and participation in my life. I definitely don't live in an RPG and war game library. That would never happen. At least I'm not buying combat hovercraft. Thank Hades for small favors.
