# RPG A DAY 2024: An accessory you'd like to see? tags: #thoughts #thoughts/RPGaDay/2024 ![[RPGaDAY2024-024x723.jpg]] What a bizarre question. At least for me, who tends to not accumulate accessories in any particular form or fashion. And if I'm inclined towards such a thing, I'll often design my own, thanks to 3D printing, unless it involves some complicated engineering. See, yesterday's answer for that. In a real sense, the question is, *"What sort of thing would make my gameplay more common, more convenient, or lower friction that is conceivable in the physical universe?"* ![[Ako Dice d6 (black).png]] Settle in for a story. Once upon a time, many years ago, a Kickstarter popped up from a new company called **Ako**. They wanted to produce sets of dice with unusual markings, in particular [D6s from milled aluminum. Hefty, chunky, electroplated and engraved](https://www.ako-dice.com/product-page/ako-dice-i-2-dice). Beautiful dice. Needless to say, I had to get in on some of that action and ended up with what I legitimately think are my favorite dice in my rather vast collection. At the time, they didn't come in multiple colors. It was black and silver,^[Today, of course, you can get them in a veritable rainbow. This will come up later.] but that's fine with me. Years passed, and they were a pretty successful company. They continued producing die designs with unusual marking layouts in various forms and formats. Still, beautiful stuff. But they don't sell singleton dice and they don't sell dice in the combination that I need.^[For extra comedy value, it's worth pointing out that I have actually approached Ako about selling some one-offs or even damaged or cast-off singleton dice. While they were extremely friendly and very forthcoming, they were unable to do so. So, you know, it's not like I haven't tried to give them money.] So let's talk about what I want. ![[Ako Dice III D6 (red).png]] These are the *[Ako Dice III](https://www.ako-dice.com/product-page/ako-dice-iii)*. As you can see, the marking is somewhat different from the original version, but it also adds some incredibly detailed checkering on the surface. This is a beautiful die. Notably, and sadly, I don't have any of them. You will also note that they come in multiple colors. This particular example happens to be red. ![[Ako Poly Dice (blue).png]] These are the [*Ako Poly Dice* in blue](https://www.ako-dice.com/product-page/ako-poly-dice), because I thought we needed some visual diversity, and just using the same color over and over is fine for the sales page, but I have to keep things a little spicier. I'm not crazy about the marking on these in particular. I think a little more abstract methodology[^wand] would probably go a long way toward making me happier, but on top of that, they only sell them in sets of the traditional **[[Dungeons and Dragons|D&D]]** polyhedral 7 set. No one who plays **Dungeons & Dragons** *ever* needs *only* those seven dice. You're going to want at least a couple of D6's and probably a couple of D8's just to deal with damage. So I have no idea why you can only buy dice in sets of seven at any point, but here we are. Still, the patina is beautiful. The color is nice and rich. This is fantastic *if* you need a full set of polyhedrals, I probably have a dozen or more sets of polyhedrals. I don't need that. What I *do* need, and this is where things get interesting, are specific dice sets for **[[Ironsworn - Starforged|Starforged]]** and **[[Ironsworn - Starforged|Sundered Isles]]** ![[Starforged Dice.png]] > [!quote] **Sundered Isles**, pg 7 > *THE TWIN FATES* > > The people of the isles often refer to the moons as the Twin Fates. Want to give your playscape a thematic boost? Treat your challenge dice as manifestations of the Fates. Designate one D10 as Cinder, and the other as Wraith. Choose colors that evoke the light of each moon. > > When helpful, use these challenge dice to reveal the nature of a situation, either by adding nuance to a move result or as a standalone oracle. Let the higher of the two dice decide. Cinder is hot: aggressive, passionate, resolute, physical. Wraith is cool: careful, mysterious, cunning, unearthly. On a match, choose which has the most influence. > > To learn which moon the sky favors on a particular night, roll both dice. A low value on a moon’s die means it is shadowed or not visible. A high roll has it hanging brightly in the sky. 10 means it is full. Double full moons is a rare event, full of portent. ![[Sundered Isles Oracle and Cursed Dice.png]] Let's put it all together. What is it that I actually want? I want a set of *Ako Dice* in milled aluminum containing the following: - A D6 in black with a futuristic trigram-derived marking system. I would accept the original Ako markings as well. With that beautiful checkering, because that is absolutely stunning. - 3D10. One in Crimson. One in Ice Blue. One in Poisonous Green. The trigram numeric markings would be great or a futurized version of them. - A very nice professional box with foam padding on the inside to transport them (the original dice came with a very nice one; I wish we had more things like that). If the Cursed Die had a particularly horrific icon in place of its zero, I would accept that as a beautiful piece of perfectly appropriate labeling. I would probably be willing to pay a reasonable premium for that particular set of dice. If the D10s are also textured in some way, checkering or something else, even more primo. If I have to want an accessory I don't have and have essentially infinite budget to ask for it, this is what I want: a custom solid aluminum set of **[[Ironsworn - Starforged|Starforged/Sundered Isles]]** dice. See to it, fancy lad. [^wand]: Frankly, I'd totally go for the trigram design from the *[Wand Dice](https://uniquedice.com/pages/wand-dice)* as an excellent option.![[Trigram Numbering.png]]
